Hi! I’m Debra Battistella, originator of Creative Concepts in Occupational Therapy PLLC.  So you’re clear about me from the beginning, I love people and I love occupational therapy! This works out well since occupational therapy is all about helping people…

I’ve been an occupational therapy (OT) practitioner since 2001. First as a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA), then, in 2006 I graduated with my Master’s Degree in Occupational Therapy. In between I acquired a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology – which was a lot of fun and is a great fit for what I do.  In addition to being an Occupational Therapist, I maintain my credentials as a COTA. A lot of people ask me why and I am sure you are equally as curious. Actually, there are a few reasons:
– First, because becoming a COTA meant I had to overcome a lot of obstacles.
– Second, over the course of completing the degree requirements, I discovered I have a passion for learning. I also developed a passion for OT – I whole-heartedly love this field.
– Lastly, because I teach in an occupational therapy assistant program, maintaining my credentials is a way for me to demonstrate the value I place on being a COTA and because our accrediting body likes it.

I used to consider myself a late bloomer because I returned to college in my thirties. However, since coming to understand that life unfolds perfectly, I now know that occupational therapy found me at just the right time. I feel very fortunate to share my knowledge of the field with occupational therapy assistant students as an instructor, fieldwork coordinator and fieldwork educator. I also work as an occupational therapist in an acute care setting, helping people who are critically ill on their paths to becoming well again. To that end, I have extensive experience working in inpatient and outpatient rehab settings as well as in skilled nursing facilities. I am so excited to share my knowledge and experience in a new way through Creative Concepts in Occupational Therapy PLLC.

As an occupational therapist, I understand and value the importance of life roles. In fact, I’ve enjoyed quite a few over the course of my life. Some really awesome ones include being a daughter, sister, mom, grandmother, friend, and caregiver. Like you, my roles bring with them a plethora of experiences. These experiences, combined with my OT knowledge and desire to create a community of support, led me to develop this site.

One very important thing I’ve noticed about life is that it’s easier and more enjoyable to navigate when the right tools and supports are in place. They certainly can help with whatever one happens to be doing. Personally, I’ve gone through some pretty trying and scary times where I fumbled along, wondering if I was doing the right thing. During those times I felt very alone and very afraid and often pondered on how I could have done things different and better. I imagine that had I possessed a little knowledge and had a few strategies I could use I may have felt like I knew what I was doing and THAT would have made me feel better.

When I know what I’m doing I feel EMPOWERED. I LOVE THAT FEELING! That’s when I know I’m bringing my best self to life. As a teacher and OT clinician, I am privileged to provide people with knowledge, tools, and strategies that, when applied, empower them to be their best selves. I developed Creative Concepts as another avenue for sharing information with you so you can be empowered too.

Creative Concepts in Occupational Therapy PLLC is all about sharing insights, knowledge, strategies and tools. Whether you are an occupational therapy practitioner or a person who may benefit from some of these ideas, the goal of this site is to help you live your best life!
